CHUPKE CHUPKE

Not so Happening!

Director:Priyadarshan

Starring:Suniel Shetty, Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapoor, Paresh Rawal, Neha Dhupia

Priyadarshan does not return with a great promise this time. The magic of Priyan is missing in this flick as only the 1st half of the film is interesting. The plot this time looks more confusing and less appealing. Also the films fails to deliver a good romance quotient between Shahid and Kareena.

The schizoid plot hasn’t a single drop of coherence. But what matters is present; the comic situations all feature rib-tickling dialogues and an endless barrage of hilarious moments.

THE FILM

The film is an ensemble romantic comedy of errors and mistaken identities and

debts to be repaid.

Jeetu is a small town hustler who is constantly in debt and dodging creditors and moneylenders. His father Jayved Prasad, a respectable retired schoolteacher

and his fiancée Pooja are made to suffer the consequences of his instability and his debts. Everyone including Pooja’s father Mohan tells Jeetu, that it would be better if he were to kill himself as he keeps getting his family into trouble. He

doesn’t feel that he is worthy of Pooja and encourages her to marry someone else, which she doesn’t agree to. Jeetu then fakes his own death so that his family gets to claim his life insurance and pay off some of his debts.

Jeetu is found entangled in fishing nets by a pair of fishermen Bandya and Gundya who take him home with them. One of the fishermen Bandya, owes money to Prabhat Singh Chauhan, a Gujrati businessman. On discovering Jeetu

caught like a mermaid in their nets, they read a newspaper clipping that leads them to assume that he is a millionaire and they hatch a scheme to give Jeetu’s services to Prabhat Singh Chauhan in exchange for the money that they owe.

Jeetu, sensing he may reveal too much, plays safe and pretends to be a deafmute and plays along with them.

Complications ensue when Chauhan’s niece (Shruti) also turns out to be a deafmute. Her over protective elder brother, Mangal Singh Chauhan, is trying to get her married but the engagement is called off, leaving her in disgrace. Jeetu’s

secret is revealed one night when Shruti and her cousin Meenakshi discover him drunk and singing. They agree to keep his secret if in return he agrees to court Shruti.Shruti comes to realize that Jeetu owes people a lot of money and she and

Meenakshi devise another scheme to pay off his debts. In the interim, Meenakshi’s uncle Prabhat Singh Chauhan is involved in an accident and Jeetu goes to his assistance. The police suspect otherwise and he returns to the house

beaten up. The girls change their opinion of Jeetu after seeing this behaviour and Shruti confesses her love for him. Her cousin Meenakshi sees this exchange and tells Mangal Singh Chauhan, Shruti’s protective elder brother. Mangal, afraid for Mohini’s honour, forces Jeetu to consent to marrying her. In the meanwhile Bandya has returned from Jeetu’s village, after visiting his uncle there and giving him the suitcase full of money. Bandya asks after Pooja and is told that she is at her husband’s house. Jeetu is told this news and concedes to the marriage with Shruti. But life again takes an unexpected turn for Jeetu.

Verdict:

The film is an exact remake of Malayalam film "Punjabi House".   In Chup Chup Ke, the family is been changed from Punjabi to Gujarati and the place from Kerala to Bengal.   Few comic scenes added for Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav and few trimming in the story is been done to accommodate one additional song and the time used for the added scenes.

It's hard to believe how Shahid manages to survive in unbelievable circumstances.

Maybe Priyadarshan is so used to his comedies working well, that he has lost touch with drama - remeber how Kyun Ki bombed? The romance in Chup Chup Ke is absolutely inspid -sad, considering he cast real-life sweethearts Shahid and Kareena, who give off no sparks of passion.

Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav's tremendous chemistry makes up for Shahid and Kareena's lack of the same. The perfectly timed duo keeps the picnic going with gusto. Alas, they are let down by the writer for the film soon runs out of gags, slapstick and steam. There is very little of Rawal here.

Neha is impressive while Sushma looks great all the time.

Music is average.   Dil Vich Lagya ve…. Aa Re Aa Re…. & Ghoomar… are good for listening, but not exceptional.

Paresh Rawal has done the wonderful job in Chup Chup Ke too.  His look is different and performance as usual.     Rajpal yadav is at his best in this film. You cannot stop laughing whenever he appears in the screen. He got a meaty role and he did it with style.

Om Puri is good, but his role is not much supported to generate the same chemistry between him to Paresh Rawal in Malamaal weekly.

On the whole the film is average and suffers because of a bad script.
