One of Yash Raj Films’ biggest setbacks of the year, the film lost its ground at most of the major places barring a good opening largely due to the extensive marketing and pre-release hype. The film managed to earn Rs. 20.23 crores in 7 weeks’s showing at over 400 screens in the domestic region.
Synopsis: The story of two sisters, Badki (Rani Mukherjee) and Chutki (Konkona Sen Sharma), who spend most of their time in village playing pranks and fooling around. But soon the family is hit by financial crisis and Badki is faced with the challenge of pulling her family out of the situation and not letting it affect Chutki’s education. Badki alongwith her mother Sabitri (Jaya Badhuri) manage to keep the crisis out of Chutki’s notice and Badki travels to Mumbai in search of an earning. In Mumbai, Badki has to face the hard life in Mumbai where dark shadows followed her in the streets and threw her on a path that her family principles never taught her to trek on. She soon found herself working as a prostitiute in the high class urban city, only to support her family back home. When Chutki finished her education, she shifted to Mumbai and found a good job here and the love of her life. All was going well for the sisters until Chutki learnt Badki’s truth.
The film was all hype and no show mostly due to a poor script and weak storyline. The film had some good performances by Rani Mukherjee, Konkona Sen, Kunal Kapoor and Jaya Bachchan and an above average musical score. Pradeep Sarkar lost track of the original theme of the film and it became more of a predictable monotonous saga unfolding. The film got weak critical and general appreciation. A major flop!
