Easily one of the best films, performance-wise, Guru got a thumbs up at all the major centers and did exceptionally well at the start of the year. It was the earliest hits and the only hit for weeks after the turn of a new year. The film managed to have a long run for over 10 weeks at the box office earning over 41 Crores. Mani Ratnam’s film was appreciated both critically and by the masses alike.

Synopsis: Gurukant Desai is a young villager who dreams big. Despite opposition from his father, he leaves his village and comes to Mumbai alongwith his wife, Sujata, and brother-in-law, to set up his own business. Guru and his brother-in-law launch themselves as cloth merchants on a very small scale but Guru’s grit and determination see him scale new heights fast. Soon, he starts a polyester manufacturing plant by taking money from the public through an initial public offer (IPO). Guru grows from strength to strength till he becomes the biggest industrialist of the country. Another business magnate tries to buy Guru out but Guru, instead exposes the magnate through the media. Soon, Manik Dasgupta, the upright editor of a newspaper, turns against Guru when he realises that he has been using unfair means to grow. Despite Guru treating Dasgupta as his grandpa, the latter exposes the former regularly in his newspaper till; finally, a governmental inquiry is instituted against Guru’s polyester manufacturing units for alleged irregularities.

Guru gave us a new junior Bachchan like never before who looked effortlessly poised as a young lad and likewise as an old business tycoon. His strength in front of the camera was put to test by the brilliance of Mani Ratnam who brought a different side of Abhishek Bachchan for everyone to see. The film will also be remembered for Aishwarya’s make-up less beauty and her poise. The film’s musical score by A.R. Rehman made it one of the best soundtracks of the year too. A well-made film with good execution from the filmmaker and artists.
