Movie Review: Laga Chunari Mein Daag (2007)

laga chunari mein daag

The moment I saw the first rushes of the film, I wanted to watch this film no matter what. But now I ‘m a touch dissapointed with the film that promised lot more than what it delievered.

Apart from power packed performances and top-notch cinematography, the film lacks a solid script to hold you to your seat and the unpredictability quotient is way too less. From the start till the end of the film, you can almost guess what’s going to happen next and the twists and turns (if any) have been wrongly placed.

laga chunari...

The film starts off with the story of two sisters, Badki (Rani Mukherjee) and Chutki (Konkona Sen Sharma), who spend most of their time in village playing pranks and fooling around. But soon the family is hit by financial crisis and Badki is faced with the challenge of pulling her family out of the situation and not letting it affect Chutki’s education.

Badki alongwith her mother Sabitri (Jaya Badhuri) manage to keep the crisis out of Chutki’s notice and Badki travels to Mumbai in search of an earning.

laga chunari... In Mumbai, Badki has to face the hard life in Mumbai where dark shadows followed her in the streets and threw her on a path that her family principles never taught her to trek on. She soon found herself working as a prostitiute in the high class urban city, only to support her family back home

When Chutki finished her education, she shifted to Mumbai and found a good job here and the love of her life. All was going well for the sisters until Chutki learnt Badki’s truth.

The music of the film is above average with a couple of good tracks. The dialogues and behind-the-camera work have been immaculate. But, on a whole the film dissapoints and impresses in bits and pieces.

laga... The situation where Rani turns to prostitution is not well explained as she could have opted for some other alternative. And then when Badki’s cousion turns up in Mumbai out of nowhere, the audience are left confused with the poor scripting of the film.

Rani was excellent, Konkona and Jaya Bachchan were equally though Abhishek Bachchan was a complete waste in the film.

Overall, the film is way too predictable and lacks a solid script to back the power-packed performances. Despite of all the hype, expectations and Rani’s author-backed role, the film might fail at the box office.

Ebolly rating: 2/5

Leave your comments on the movie. How did you find it? What’s your take on Rani’s latest flick??
