Eklavya - India’s official entry to the Oscars

Surprisingly, India’s official entry for this year’s Academy Awards left a few with dropped jaws. The film must have interested the critics but was a box office disaster. Many of the reviewers who gave it a thumbs up also felt that the film lacked the pace to keep the audience glued to the film and most importantly had a shabby casting. So, is Eklavya the right choice for India’s official entry to the Oscars?

After last year’s much hyped and a more deserving entry, Rang De Basanti, this year’s choice has been majorly criticised in the media and among the masses alike.

Eklavya-the royal guard got a poor audience feedback and with films like Guru, Chak De India etc releasing in the same year, for me this is a bad choice. But after Rang De’s poor luck at the Oscars after the massice expectations from the film. May be… and jsut may be, Eklavya might prove to be a winner.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s EKLAVYA - The Royal Guard has already received accolades in Hollywood. The film got a standing ovation at the Billy Wilder Theater in UCLA, where it was recently screened as part of the India Splendour Film Festival. Robert L. Friedman, the former President of Columbia Pictures and AMC Theaters applauded it as one of the great foreign films to have graced Hollywood in recent years.

Lionel Wigram, Producer of the HARRY POTTER films, said “It’s a masterpiece and I can safely say that it stands an excellent chance of winning India a much awaited Oscar in the foreign film category.” Jeffery Silver, Producer of the film 300, found it to be “a thriller that elevates to the level of art.”
