OSO

The film’s music spells heaps of expectations riding on the shoulders of duo Vishal-Shekhar with lyrics penned down by the ever-so delightful Javed Akhtar. All you expect is a musical extravaganza to support a film which is one of the most hyped films of our times.

From SRK’s six-pack abs, Farah Khan’s second offering, introduction of the supermodel-turned-actress Deepika Padukone, SRK and the entire star cast flaunting a new look to the expectations of revisiting of the 70s-80s era, not only through the film but also through the soundtrack as well.

To some extent, the album is an above average affair but some of the tracks really dont impress you to the extent like other tracks do. Here’s an insight into what you can expect from this album.

AANKHON MEIN TERI
Rating: 3.5/5
For me this is the pick of the album with KK at his very best. The soft and soothing number slowly grows on you as you realise that you hear it for repeated times. The song brings back the ‘Allah Ke Bande’ duo of Vishal-Shekhar to the genre they trek less than often. KK’s soothing voice adds magic to the beautiful lyrics penned down by Vishal himself. This romantic number gets you humming and a real good start to the album.

Dard-e-Disco
Rating:2.5/5
The song that got all the hype thanks to King Khan’s new found six-pack abs and his shirtless fling, the song is more of a visual treat as Vishal-Shekhar dish out an average track. The track which promised to be the highlight dance number sung by Sukhwinder, is reduced to a semi-western and persian offering with digital sounds thrown in here and there.

Deewangi Deewangi
Rating: 3.5/5
The track is such a relief after the much dissapoiting Dard-e-Disco. The track opens to an impressive beginning which is undoubtedly been the highlight of the film’s promotion. Shaan, Udit Narayan, Shreya Ghoshal, Sunidhi Chauhan and Rahul Saxena come together to give a real foot-tapping number which gets you swinging to the nice Indian-western tune of the song. The song can be the opening or the closing track for the film and is expected to do really once the film hits the screens.

MAIN AGAR KAHOON
Rating: 2.5 /5
The track opens with a sweet tickling sound which is again a good promotional soundclip and then moves on to a soft number. The song gives you the 60s-70s feel again as Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal render a hummable number.

JAG SOONA SOONA LAGE
Rating:3/5
Here comes a passionate, painful number crooned by the geniuses of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Richa Sharma. The song has been penned down by guest lyricist Kumaar and talks about separation in love. The number moves with the vocal brilliance and the evident pain in it.

DHOOM TAANA
Rating: 3/5
During the late 70s and early 80s, there was a time in Bollywood when the divas were one of the finest dancers too and the ‘dafliwala’ types were the songs that were popular and in vogue. The track opened with the ‘dhol’ and ‘ghoongroo’ sound and then it shifted to rock and roll and then moved back to the original beat again. The track definitely stands out for its uniqueness and a melody which is not contemporary but nostalgic to Indian film music of the era gone by. Abhijeet and Shreya Ghoshal do justice to the romantic mood of the song.

DASTAAN-E-OM SHANTI OM
Rating:3/5
The track has a loud instrumental opening with a lot of orchestra and then it softly mellows down and then picks up the pace again. A thumping number sung by Shaan which has impressive lyrics though fails to recreate the magic of ‘Ek Haseena Thi’ from Ghai’s Karz.

DARD-E-DISCO - REMIX
Rating:3/5
Remixed by DJ Aqeel, the track definitely gets a lift up and is more groovier than the original track. The song finally gets the ‘Bappi’ disco flavor and is quite pacy. It wont be a bad idea to keep this track on air rather than the original one.

DEEWANGI [ Rainbow Mix ]
Rating: 3/5
Like the original, like the remixed version. A nice, groovy and hummable number. The remixed version only adds more techno sound to it which was the only thin=g lacking in the original track. A hands down winner both the original and remixed version in the entire world.

OM SHANTI OM MEDLEY MIX
Rating: 2.5/5
A catchy remix of the highlight numbers and fusing the Indian elements with a lot of digital sound thrown in. A nice medley of the songs adding a lot of zing and pace to the track.

DASTAAN [The Dark Side Mix]
Rating:2.5/5
Track remixed by Zoheb, DJ Nikhil Chinappa (popular MTV VJ) and DJ Nawed. A lot of digital sounds used in the remix and a pacy number has been created to break the otherwise mundane loudness of the orchestra.

OM SHANTI OM THEME MUSIC
Rating:3/5
A short and slow keyboard number apt for the background sound or the theme track.

Overall, the album is definitely not like the usual stuff. Vishal and Shekhar finally put together a good, classy soundtrack which has something for everyone. It may appeal to some and some might feel it lacks their groovy and foot-tapping element. Well, the soundtrack seems to be apt for the movie and most of the songs are situational and keeping the eras revisited in the film, the album is quite a good effort. The album is expected to do better once the film releases worldwide.
