Story: Sooraj Barjatya
Sooraj Barjatya’s family entertainer gave the Rajshri Productions its much needed success. The film that brought the concept of arrange-marriage to the theatres not only won hearts but earned bucks all across the nation. The film is even doing well at the overseas market for its touch of innocence and simplicity. It has become a huge rage in the small cities and towns and continues to pull audiences into the cinema halls. The film has earned a gross collection of Rs. 20.22 Crores in its 7th week. The film is one of the superhits releases of the year.
Synopsis: Prem (Shahid Kapoor) may be an eligible bachelor agrees to meet Poonam (Amrita Rao) just to please his dad (Anupam Kher) and finds a woman he can really grow to love. An awkward, formal exchange of words grows into a deep, meaningful conversation as Prem and Poonam soon discover that they are soul mates. Poonam, an orphan, has grown up in a small town, where her Chacha (Alok Nath) has brought her up to want for nothing. Chachi (Seema Biswas), however, is jealous of Amrita’s beauty, simplicity and charm, as her own daughter Rajni (Amrita Prakash) is overshadowed. Gentle, soft-spoken Prem, the scion of one of Delhi’s most prosperous business houses, has grown up living in the fast lane, but retains his respect for family traditions and values. The two hit it off and soon they are engaged. They are to be married in six months. Prem and Poonam now enter the most magical and romantic time of their lives. Six months fly by. Just when everything is set for the wedding a crisis puts their love through a trial by fire.
The film is a simple take on the institution of marriage and is a pure family drama. It has its good points and bad points. The music is not up to the mark and the film is slow in its first half though, the second half is gripping with an interesting climax. It’s definitely an old wine in new bottle or rather a recycled bottle. There’s nothing new offered by the script though, the execution and emotional sequences are good.
