Director Karan Johar shifts bases as he treks an unusual terrain with this experimental film. The boldness in the plot and story of the movie proves that Indian cinema has come of age. The film based on the sensitive issue of extra-marital relation and the complexities of love and expectations leaves you baffled as to whether you are actually watching a Bollywood film. The mega starrer became a hit in the domestic circuit though it faced criticism for the treatment of the subject at hand. The film became the biggest all time grosser in the overseas market with a mammoth collection of over 102 crores and becoming the highest foreign exchange grosser for Bollywood. The film earned Rs. 46. 4 Crores in this year at the Indian box office.
Synopsis: KANK centres on the budding romance between Shah Rukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee - both married to different people. Rani is married to Abhishek Bachchan and Shah Rukh is married to Preity Zinta. Both the couples are settled into a life of domestic routine, and are convinced that they are happy in their respective relationships, yet the protagonists still yearn for something deeper and more meaningful, which is precisely what they find in each other. From a relationship starting off in pleasant barbs, the two begin to develop and acknowledge the feelings they have beneath the surface. When their feelings come to the fore, what results is a collision of lives and emotions, affecting everyone involved and changing them forever.
The film in many ways showcases the changing trend of the society. It has good performances and the music is a treat for the ears. The film scores on its visuals, Amitabh’s peppy character and the subject dealt in it. And the biggest drawback is the treatment of the issue. The sensitive idea got a weak direction as certain loopholes cropped up like Rani’s dissatisfaction with hubby Abhishek hasn’t been explained clearly. There is an abrupt drift from SRK and Rani’s married lives to their romantic lives. The film tries to cater to an audience which is still apprehensive of such boldness of issue in Indian cinema.
