Dhoom 2 does what Don failed to do

Sanjay Gadhvi’s Dhoom 2 has done what Farhan Akhtar’s Don failed to do; enter the UK Box Office Top 10.

The Hrithik Roshan starrer has entered the official UK movie charts at number 6. The film fared better than the Hugh Jackman thriller The Prestige, which fell down to number 7.

This gives more thought that Hrithik Roshan’s portrayal of a bad guy has been apreciated much more than Shah Rukh Khan’s much touted Don. The promotion for Don was also double that of Dhoom 2.

James Bond easily held on to top spot at the box office with “Casino Royale” taking 8.5 million pounds in its second weekend, according to Screen International figures on Tuesday.

That figure shows the film holding up well after its debut weekend take of 11.4 million and brings Daniel Craig’s 007 up to a total gross of 27.9 million.

In the United States, the gritty depiction of Ian Fleming’s first Bond tale was kept from top spot by the dancing penguins of “Happy Feet” but they do not make their entrance in Britain until December 8.

In the meantime, Bond brought in more over the three days last weekend than the other top nine together — five of which were newcomers.

Sacha Baron Cohen’s “Borat” stayed at No.2, with “The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause” new at three.

Straight in at four was “Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny” about a newly formed rock band’s theft of a magical guitar pick from a rock and roll museum.

New at five were more “don’t try this at home” antics in the latest spin-off from the MTV series: “Jackass: Number Two.”

Seventh down from third was “The Prestige,” a thriller tracking the rivalry between Hugh Jackman and Christian Bale as two young magicians searching for fame in 19th century London.

New at eight was director Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” about a lonely child creating her own fantasy world in 1940s Spain.

Ninth down five places was dance-based romantic drama “Step Up” while at 10 down from five, after a blood-spattered five-week run, was horror flick “Saw III.”
