Farhan Akhtar broke the Don

Farhan Akhtar broke the Don – Tony’s letter to Mr. Akthar

Dear Farhan,

It’s been a long time since I have come out of a cinema theatre, disappointed and with my head down in shame, after seeing a Shah Rukh Khan film. This is exactly what happened to me when the credits started to roll, at the end of Farhan Akhtar’s ‘Don- The Chase Begins Again’, and I was not the only one. The majority of the audience in the theatre were left bemused and disheartened after seeing such a disastrous film, especially as it came from such a well respected name – Farhan Akhtar.

Sometimes peaking too early in your career is not that good. Maybe sometimes you should learn the ropes, go through a few mistakes, and then produce a film that befits your family name. I never wanted to say this, I wish this thought had never come across my mind, but Farhan dear… your ‘Dil Chahta Hai’ was a fluke. A one chance wonder that you will never repeat again in your career. ‘Lakshya’ was a huge disaster, well made, but a disaster nevertheless. And now this piece of crap, where you had the biggest names, the huge budget, and a storyline to match, but the end product was just pure rubbish. And I mean pure rubbish!

Of course you will make money from it, you will get people coming in droves to see it, but in the end it is you yourself that will have to wrestle with your conscience. You played around with a Bollywood classic - Don, you played around with the biggest name in Bollywood – Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, and you played around with the emotions of us… the Bollywood fans. We can forgive you for making a disastrous film, we can forgive you for re-making a classic, we can even forgive you for replacing a Bollywood legend, but we can’t forgive you for playing around with our emotions.

Why such hype, why the intense promotion, and why on earth did you not watch the film yourself before you unleashed it upon us. These days you can sell the dirt of the back of your shoulders, if you have the right promotion, that is not the point I am trying to make here – you will make a lot of ‘moolah’ (even though you deserve not to) – the point I am trying to make is – “Why Farhan did you not watch the film yourself?”. From you previous films, you seem to know what you are doing, you are a Bollywood film-lover, and then why did you not make sure the end product was befit for us? And if somehow you had lost your mind, then you could have asked your film-writer father, your superstar step-mother, or your film industry friends. Did none of them tell you what you just did?

I can’t put the blame on anyone else but you. I can’t put the blame on your father (he isn’t a director), or your step-mother (she isn’t a director too), or on Shah Rukh Khan (he just got paid for doing what he does). The blame has to lay on you and you alone. You were the director, you were responsible for everything, and you were responsible for the end product.

At the end of the day I can only conclude that someone gave the kid a toy to play with. And the kid got so happy about getting this toy, that he let his brain run wild, and broke it. Farhan my dear, you broke the toy. Now I only wish that the next toy you get is when you grow up!

Most people dont understand the film…if it would have been the same..people would have said…why to see the same thing …now when its diffrent then orignal people dont want to see that….That’s director’s interpretation….this people dont interpret….

I dont see why Mr. Tony felt that way, why not people accept the good changes, I think our people are still want to see same old script and ordinary masala movies. or copy from hollywood movies.

My personal view is Farhan’s DON was very much justified and he did brilliant job. Personally I like the ending of Farhan’s DON as compare to OLD DON.

What an amazing film, get with it we are in a new era with high-tech gadgets and amazing technology. So people just have to appreciate this fact and change with it, just as Farhan Akhtar’s Don has done. Most of the bollywood watchers just like the same old films, where boy meets girl, falls in love, have a struggle when trying to stay toghether, then go off and get married and live happily ever after. To be honest these people just live in a fantsay world and have to start to appreciate the new generation of bollywood films!!!!!!!!

    Tony,
Why would you write such a load of negative feedback on a film that just seems to bring out a complete set of positives for todays generation of film making. I went to watch this film In London and took with me one of my Non-asian friends(Catherine) and she was absolutely amazed how much Bollywood as developed towards competing with the Giants of Hollywood cinema. I just cant understand why many of us Indians cannot agree with change. Watching the same love stories and family dramas week in week out would just get so boring. You would not see Hollywood, producing Titanic style love stories week in week out, people would just stop going to the cinema. We all have to start adapting to change and appreciate stylish cinema. Hats off to Farhan for going for just a Hollywood style script, well done and all the best for yor future productions, I look forward to see them. As for Don,it has to be the best action movie ever produced in Bollywood, everything about it was, how can i put it “SLICK!!”. The twists & turns in the story, the mind-blowing scenery, hot girls, stunning music, the fast pace of the film and last but not least the HEART-THOB of millions here in London, and the BAADSHAH himself, SHAH RUKH KHAN,xxxx. AS for me I have seen it once already, and I am planning already to make another outing to the cinema sometime this week!!

    Tony,

I 100% agree with you. I am miffed with Farhan Akhtar and SRK for mucking around with a classic. I think Farhan needs to get his head reexamined. He has played with fire here.

This is a terrible movie. No two ways about it.

This is what I hate about the fanatics … It’s your opinion and people should not abuse you just because they feel differently.

Keep up the good work !

I’m sorry, but does anyone understand what Tony found so awful about this movie?
He drones on and on how disappointed he is - but what did he expect? A 1:1 copy with a Big B clone in the title role?
Or the ‘Dil Chahta Hai’-dudes chasing done while exploring human relationships?

  17. mack on November 1st, 2006 at 4:55 pm

    Tony,

The old version was a piece of shit in it stime except for the song that became a rage. No cult following or classic in any way. Just plain B-grade mob movie with top stars of those days. It was also inspired from an earlier flick of Shammi Kapoor “China Town”.

The new was more exicting, perfect popcorn flick , fast paced and enjoyable with added bonus of twist in the story which was liking the icing on the cake. I think, you are pissed off that Farhan could pull something so good and not do a scene-to-scene remake and surprised us.

The movie is a hit and that is all it matters. Its bollywood for crying of loud, we shoudl be thankful to have a least witness an interesting action flick in a long time.

Thewhole topic of discussion makes me sick.

  19. Ali on November 8th, 2006 at 9:33 am

Tony has lost da plot, I think he cant read and went 2 see sum girlie movie thinking it was don. Tony you sukkkkkkk. Don is a brilliant movie, u can watch it wid ur g/friend or ur mates. Tony go back 2 school.

  20. Sid on November 10th, 2006 at 2:43 pm

I couldn’t agree with Tony any more. I believe this movie was a huge dissapointment and a disaster as well. I aslo believe our views would have been a little different if they movie didn’t have so much hype around. People expected a lot and did not satisfy.
I believe the script was weak. The screenplay was horrible. It was very choppy, especially in the first halr an hour. No flow to the story. And I really hate to say this b.c I’m a HUGE SRK fan, the acting was not up to par. I found it to be a a little over done. And a really good director would have picked it up right away. Eventhough I think SRK is very versatile and started his career in negative roles, I don’t think he can pull them off any more. I honestly believe Saif or Abhishek would have done a far superior job. I really hope this movie doesn’t get nomaited for whole bunch of awards just b.c of the names attached to it.
I really hope Farhan and SRK can make up for what did with this one.
