Don of a new genre: Movie review

Director: Farhan Akhtar

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Shah Rukh Khan again, Priyanka Chopra, Kareena Kapoor, Isha Koppikar, Arjun Rampal, Boman Irani and Om Puri

This is new age cinema. Forget what you saw of Don in 1978. Frankly, that Amitabh Bachchan starrer Don suited the time and temperament then. If you haven’t seen that Don, great. This one is for you. Earlier only the good had to triumph. Now grey shades don’t matter. Even black doesn’t.

Don is black. Unlike the anti-hero in Baazigar, Anjaam and Darr, this Don of a Shah Rukh Khan is only a bad man. He loves to kill his enemies. “Don Ke dushman kee sabse badee galti yeh hai kee woh Don ka Dushman hai.”

The police are on his case, he works for a big Indian drug smuggler called Singhania and has set base in Malaysia.

He kills an accomplice Ramesh who tries to move away from his gang, and then kills his girlfriend (Kareena Kapoor) as well when she tries to get him caught. Ramesh’s sister Roma (Priyanka Chopra) is now on his case and wants revenge. She joins the Don’s gang.

But a cop D’Silva (Boman Irani) is on Don’s trial and gets close to him many times. During one such time when he chases Don down to India, he gets hold of him. He then holds him hostage without arresting him and then gets a duplicate Vijay (SRK again) to masquerade as the real Don. Vijay is taking care of a lost kid Deepu whose education D’Silva promises to fund.

Vijay manages to penetrate into the gang and slowly gets into the Don’s shoes.

Meanwhile Jasjit (Arjun Rampal) is a man who has been wronged by D Silva having led to his wife’s death. Jasjit is baying for D Silva’s blood and realises that Deepu is his son and the latter knows where he is.

A cat and mouse game ensues over a disc containing past all business details and associates of Don and some names could even tumble out of the closet.

But then there is a huge twist to this tale…

In fact this Don is a lot like the Vijay Anand directed Jewel Thief and has a lot of scenes which has been borrowed from that film as well.

Performances are A-Grade. SRK is the king. Priyanka Chopra is very good too and Kareena Kapoor is complete eye candy.

The songs are good, but nothing as compared to the old one. In fact the Kareena Kapoor Ae Mera Dil… is sexy but the lip synch isn’t working as well. Even the Khaike paan banaraswala number isn’t as good as the original with the rawness missing.

So as told earlier keep the comparisons aside and enjoy Don.

Don 8/10

Spoiler: Read at your own risk

There is no scene of two Shah Rukh Khans fighting each other. But yes, one Shah Rukh Khan kills the other one… And a sequel can be made of this remake…

just watched movie last night, and it was superb. Action / Pace was very good. I have seen such kind of action first time in hindi movies. loved the first action sequence between DON & Chunky.

    Bravo DON Team … !!!

Don is a brilliant film — Farhan and Shahrukh redefine the old concept is a very contemporary and stylish manner. It is a complete entertainer. Those who have written bad reviews of the movie or compare it to the old Don especially comments about SRK not portyaring Vijay have simply missed the point. Too bad that renowned critics such as Taran Adarsh fall in this category of the movie being too savvy for them. If you watch it to the end and get it, it all makes complete sense. It is pathetic that reviewers are trying to harass Farhan for an effort that is simply outstanding — just because he won’t be able to defend those criticisms without giving away too much about the film.
Forget the reviews — just go enjoy the film and of course — SRK rules, so nothing else about the film really matters… :-)

I had huge expectations from Don but this time Farhan has let me completely down. The film is just not good enough and in fact can get very boring at times. Although the acting from the whole cast is good, the film is a complete let-down. Watch Jaan-e-man instead which is definitely entertaining. I reluctantly when to see it and was hugely satisfied.

In one word i wud say that the movie is Disappointing!! After a good start, the movie lets u down. Acting by SRK is nice but still his performance does not rescues the movie. This does not looks like a Farhan Akhtar movie.
Box Office wise i dunno but satisfaction wise JEM has beaten Don by miles.

Great performance! SRK has done well, but it is the special effects and a very sexy Priyanka that linger in my mind. A few smart new twists to an old tale, digital-age effects and music..and you have a winner! Good work!
