First Look: Ram Gopal Verma Ki Sholay

The following is the first look release poster of the 2007 Sholay remake.

Ram Gopal Varma’s remake with Amitabh Bachchan as Gabbar Singh continues to inspire much debate.

The latest update is that RGV’s project is facing another injunction from the producer of the film GP Sippy’s grandson Sascha, and will have to be named Ram Gopal Varma Ke Sholay, instead of using the original title.

Meanwhile, Himesh Reshammiya might be opting out as the composer. Ganesh Hegde (yes, the choreographer) has composed the new Mehbooba O Mehbooba track, and Sunidhi Chauhan has taken over vocal duties from Asha Bhosle — with Bachchan himself apparently chipping in from time to time.

Hema Malini has gone on record telling a television channel that there should not be a Sholay remake. “Sholay has to be seen many times,” the actress said. “Not made many times.”

Almost as if in response, Varma has said his film doesn’t revolve around Basanti, the character Hema played in the original.

All we can say for now is that the debate is far from over. And that this is a pretty cool poster. (Rediff)

What do you think of this first look and what are your thoughts on the remake in general. Is it worthwile to remake a classic? Will RGV manage to do something that was not done in the first film? And will Gabbar Singh be more menacing in the form of Amitabh Bachchan? Leave your thoughts below.

I feel RGV is the wrong person to remake such a mega classic! his cinematic approach for movies is no way on par with the way R.SIPPYS sholay was packaged….
Remaking DON is a winning formula cause of the format and youthful presentation but to remake sholay is a mistake. Also is RGV remaking sholay or GABBAR SINGH? I think he should RE TITLE his movie to gabbar singh. In the original every character in sholay was well etched and important to the story. RGV seems to be insulting the original by degrading each female character {basanti& radha} by cussing their characterisation and also by saying that basanti was not an important charachter.RGV really thinks he something special for bollywood!

I agree with Romana,Sholay shud not be remade.Ramu shud change the title to gabbar singh as well..cause in sholay the protagonists were jai and veeru..that is they were the sholays’ who were hired to kill the bad guy..n jai cant be gabbar..i kno big b will do a wonderful job..but the original sholay had its own charm n legends, which shud not changed.

I have seen Sholay many times over, and the charm of that film still remains. In my personal opinion, if Don could be remade as Don with Shah Rukh Khan in place of Amitabh Bacchan, why create a fuss about remaking Sholay? I would love to see Amitabh Bacchan as Gabbar Singh, and I am sure that this film would make all of us sit up and view the world differently. While it is true that it would be difficult for this film to compare up to the original Sholay, and I do respect the feelings of Sascha Sippy, I feel that the original Sholay is too respected and too important in it’s own history to be disturbed by the making of another Sholay.

Hats off to RGV for attempting to remake history. Whether he is right or wrong in the remaking of Sholay should be judged only after the release of the film, why create such a ruckus before the film is made, let alone be released.

To that extent I disagree with Romana & Thamba, both of whom feel that Sholay should not be remade, and strongly suggest that it be allowed to be released. The final verdict of course, lies with the Courts and it shall be my duty, like all good law-abiding citizens to stand by the court’s decision in the matter.

Ramu should not make SHOLAY as he is not fit to direct a great movie. He is only good for making small horror / sexy films. USKI AUKAAT NAHIN HAI
