MOVIE REVIEW: DOR (2006)

Cast: Ayesha Takia, Gul Panag, Shreyas Talpade
Director: Nagesh Kukunoor

Nagesh Kukunoor has opened his doors to different cinema. For people who loved Hyderabad Blues and much alter Iqbal, Nagesh brings a fresh story with Dor.

This time Nagesh has toned down the bubbly Ayesha Takia, who plays Meera a young Rajasthani girl who loves her husband Shankar and the intimacy is well demonstrated on screen. Bollywood is shown to be a pet subject driving her life.

Shankar gets a job in Saudi Arabia and leaves.

Cut to story 2.
Zeenat is an independent but cold woman from an equally chilly Himachal Pradesh. She loves Aamir and marries him even as his family resists. She gets closer to his family only after he leaves for Saudi Arabia for work.

Cut to story 3.
Shankar and Aamir now are roommates in Saudi Arabia and when Shankar falls down from the balcony by mistake, Aamir is accused of murdering him and the Saudi government puts him in jail and if proved guilty, he would be hanged. The only way he will survive is if Shankar’s wife gives a pardon to him.

The external affairs ministry convinces Zeenat that she should go and obtain a signature from Meera and come back.

So Zeenat discards her cold attire and behaviour and rushes to find Meera. Meera meanwhile is stunned and in a widows attire. If Zeenat is not able to convince Meera, even she would be widowed.

En route, Zeenat comes across a behroopiya – a funny conman who first entertains people and then loots them in various guises. The behroopiya runs away with her property but returns to help her.

How Meera is convinced; how the behroopiya played Shreyas Talpade lets off his emotions is the story… Nagesh too makes a good cameo. Shreyas is brilliant in comic scenes as well as his mimicry. Ayesha stuns you with her performance and Gul Panag is endearing too. Nagesh Kukunoor is good in a special appearance.

The film does not have big stars, but is a different movie with a good theme. Worth a watch.
