Romance and emotions have been a trademark of late film maker Yash Chopra and you will find loads of romance, emotion, melodrama in the last directorial venture of Yash Chopra’s Jab Tak Hain Jaan. Yash Chopra has reinvented romance and given it a modern and new dimension in this movie. The story revolves around the central character Samar Anand played by Yash Chopra’s favorite actor Shahrukh Khan and the story talks about two different phases of Samar’s life. The film opens in the modern day Leh with Samar Anand, an officer in the bomb disposal squad of the Indian army, coming to diffuse a live bomb in the busy market place. He never wears a bomb suit while dealing with live bombs and he is touted as a “Man Who Can Never Die”. It is Akira, a rookie Discovery Channel documentary filmmaker, played by Anushka Sharma, who throws some light into the past of Samar Anand as she gets to read Samar’s diary.

Now, the story moves in flashback mode where you see a bubbly and young 20 year old Samar Anand doing odd jobs in London to earn a living. Music is his passion and we see him singing on the streets of London and it is in the streets where he meets Meera (Katrina Kaif) and falls for her instantly. She is engaged to a person of her father’s choice and it is at her engagement that Samar and Meera first talk to each other. Samar’s charm and personality slowly grows on her and she also starts to fall for him. Meera is a girl who makes vows to Jesus Christ for most crucial things of her life. It is one of these vows that cause a rift in her love life and what happens in the life of Samar forms the remaining crux of the story. How Samar gets into army? Why did Meera ditch Samar? Does Akira get a chance to romance Samar? All these will be answered when you watch this emotionally gripping, lengthy melodrama.

Anushka Sharma and ShahRukh Khan have given standout performances in Jab Tak Hain Jaan and Meera’s role perfectly suits Katrina Kaif, but it is her dancing skills that come to the fore more than her acting skills. The music by popular A R Rahman is not that extraordinary and grows on the listener gradually. Yash Chopra has tried his level best to knit a mess of a story written by Aditya Chopra and if Jesus Christ and retrograde amnesia was not included in the story, this movie could have turned out to be masterpiece from the house of Yash Raj Films.
